Hollywood’s Best Kept Beauty Secret: Black Soap

Hollywood’s Best Kept Beauty Secret: Black Soap

Women have been using Dead Sea Mud for centuries. Cleopatra, the woman who introduced us to milk baths, treasured this dark secret. It contains a variety of minerals that are essential for rejuvenating skin and can be found in many beauty products. The soap is the most popular. Erno Lazlo Sea Mud Soap is a favorite. Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy, and Diane Keaton all loved this soap. She cries at Woody Allen’s characters, and we decided to test the black soap.

I recently moved to New York City, and I enjoy recreating classic Hollywood moments. I love the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s, so I walked along Fifth Avenue one windy, cold morning to see the windows. I even made my husband stand at the Empire State Building, just like Sleepless in Seattle. So I was very excited to apply black soap like Hollywood stars. The new movie My Week with Marilyn, starring Michelle Williams and about Marilyn Monroe, was in my head. I lit candles to create a calming atmosphere before using the Erno Lazlo sea mud soap.

Sea Mud has many healing and restoring qualities. Sea Mud is rich in minerals like potassium, calcium, magnesium, and other essential minerals that are good for the body. It also has fine granules that exfoliate the skin. The Dead Sea water evaporates every year, and the mud on the bottom absorbs the minerals and salts. We then scoop up the soil to use as a skincare product. These essential minerals, combined with fine granules, do not strip skin of its natural oils and have been shown to reduce skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema.

It’s a bit extravagant, so I used it on my face and body. You can also use it to cleanse your skin, and it’s suitable for all skin types as it won’t strip it of its natural oils. The soap was silky and luxurious. I had expected it to smell like mud, but instead, it smelled like powdered fragrance. It frothed up to a creamy, milky texture, which was something I hadn’t expected. This soap is very concentrated. My skin felt silky, clean, and almost squeaky afterward. The next morning, I applied it to my face again, and it looked more radiant and clear. I think I am in love.

Erno Lazlo’s Sea Mud Soap has become such an iconic cleanser that some of the newer sea mud products have been created. These include Crabtree and Evelyn Black Sea Mud Soap & Seaweed Triple-Milled Soap, Adovia Dead Sea Mud Soap, or Edom black mud soap.

It was also a big difference to start while I lived in Boston. Everyone is so excited about handmade! Boston magazines are always sharing local items, which helped me to let people know that I was in the area and a part of it. After establishing myself in Boston, I knew I’d be fine moving back to my little slice of heaven in northwestern Connecticut. My shop is still associated with New England because I travel there to attend markets. But I am so happy that technology allows me to live wherever I want.

As a small company, you must realize that there is a delicate balance between being an online shop and selling to the public in person. Indie craft markets are a lot to do, but they’re so rewarding. I love to see strangers react to my work. **

What advice would you give to aspiring artists who make handcrafted beauty products in the future?

I believe that handcraft artists need to be hungry for knowledge, regardless of their medium. I read a lot of soap-making and business articles, Etsy forums, and forums on Etsy. Today, starting a business is not as expensive as it used to be. You need to have the guts to do so online. When it comes to skincare, makeup, and soap makers, you need to be unique and pay attention to ingredients and quality. It’s important to be knowledgeable and skilled in your craft, as these products will be applied to someone’s face.
