The Creosote Bush is known for its intense odor, which is most evident when it is damp; it gives the distinctive smell of desert rain that Tucson residents are aware of well. It has antimicrobial properties, and that’s why we’ve created Creosote Salve. Creosote Salve, which can be applied topically on the skin to treat cuts or burns. Creosote was a popular remedy used by the indigenous peoples for their medicinal purposes in many ways. Look it up to learn more about its historical applications, or read the following for a brief overview of its background (and suggestions on how to make Wildcraft).
The Creosote Bush, also known as chaparral or greasewood, is located in a variety of counties in Arizona. It is found at elevations less than five thousand feet and covers many square miles of Arizona’s Sonoran Desert. It’s also located within areas like the Mohave, the Chihuahuan deserts, and the Verde Valley.
This plant blooms in spring, but it can bloom at any time of the year. The flowers come with five petals and are yellow. When the flowers are pollinated, they turn 90 degrees! The leaves are small and covered with natural wax and oils in order to preserve water. When there is an extended period of dry weather, leaves fold in half, reducing their exposure to the sun. The bush may also alter its shape according to the requirements. It can be shaped in a cone shape, allowing the rain to pour through the branches to the soil, or it can be shaped in an upside-down bowl shape, which allows organic material to accumulate beneath its components, which permits other animals and plants to reside underneath.
How did we obtain Creosote to create our products? Wild Crafting, of course!
After we moved to Arizona, we wanted to utilize the plants that were at our disposal in the new area. The term “wild” Crafting is the act of taking plants in their natural habitat or in their native habitat to use. We are committed to an ethical and sustainable wildcrafting process for our products and, of course.
Wild plants are durable and durable; their power is enhanced by their natural environment, making them desired in certain instances, and the scent or taste of wild plants may be more prominent in the final product. Organic plants differ from wild plants. They tend to be grown in perfect conditions, with ample water and stress due to protection from disease or pests.
Locally-grown plants harvested ethically are crucial:
- Check to ensure that the plant isn’t endangered
- Find lively, healthy plants
- Learn about how it reproduces
- Check if there’s an option to spread the roots in order to keep the plant thriving.
- Learn how to apply seeds to allow them to germinate in the wild
- Ensure that the ecosystem is in good health when you harvest.
- Make sure you can positively influence this plant and its ecosystem.
While you’re wildcrafting, stay clear of the tracks of railroads, golf courses, and other areas that may have been spray-painted using chemicals.
Make sure you harvest respectfully for the other animals or people who are in the zone. Harvesting isn’t about just looking at the plant and deciding the desired action. It’s an act of taking a step back, taking a look at the bigger picture, and then acting respectfully. Sometimes, it’s a matter of moving to another area. For instance, you can pick one plant out of every ten you have seen and, in some other cases, trim a plant that has grown too large. Make sure you know the plant you’re taking in and the habitat it’s part of.
One source you can utilize can be found on The United Plant Savers website, which allows you to find ratings for plant populations.
